List of 15th/16th Century Occupations
Accomptant - Accountant
Administrator - Directed the affairs of another
Alchemist - Medieval chemist who claimed to be able to turn base metals into gold
Alewife - Woman who keeps an alehouse or tavern
Amanuensis - Secretary or stenographer
Apparitor - Official who summoned witnesses in the ecclesiastical courts; official formerly sent to carry out the orders of a magistrate, judge, or court
Apothecary - An Apothecy dispensed remedies made from herbs, plants and roots. Medieval physicians were expensive and a priest often held this occupation, often the only recourse for sick, poor people.
Armorer - A Medieval Armorer held an important occupation in the Medieval workforce. Armor had to be uniquely made to fit its wearer and was considered one of the specialist Medieval Occupations & Jobs.
Artist - Artists were employed in the later Medieval era by kings and nobles.
Attendent - one who attends another to perform a service Bailiff The occupation of the Castle Bailiff was to manage the castle estate or farm
Blacksmith - produce things like wrought iron gates, grills, railings, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools, agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils, horse shoes and weapons.
Canter - Religious speaker
Carpenter - The occupation of the Carpenter was diverse. Carpenters built furniture, roofing, siege engines and wood panelling. Carpenter: a skilled craftsman who shaped or made things of wood. Carpenters were highly skilled and considered to be elite tradesmen.
Chaplain - The Chaplain was responsible for the religious activities of a castle servants and Men at arms. The duties might also include that of a clerk and keeping accounts. A Priest would usually looked after the spiritual needs and confessions of the Nobles and their families
Chronologist - Recorded official events of historical importance
Constable - Constable was the occupation of the person who had been appointed as Custodian, or in charge of, the castle
Cook - Cook was employed in the castle kitchens roasting, broiling, and baking food in the fireplaces and ovens.
Cordiner - Shoemaker
Domestic - Household servant
Dairyman - Worker or owner of a dairy farm or seller of dairy products.
Driver - one who drives; coachman
Esquire - A landed proprietor
Exciseman - Excise tax collector
Farrier - Horse shoer
Footpad - Robber
Freemason - Stonecutter
Governess - female employee of a family who teaches children within their home.
Harlot/Rogue - prostitute
Henchman - A squire or page to a person of high rank
Herald/Harker - A Herald was a knights assistant and an expert advisor on heraldry.
Husbandman - Tenant farmer
Infirmarian - In charge of an infirmary
Intendant - An administrative official (as a governor)
Jester - The Jester also referred to as the Fool entertained the court
Journeyman - One who served his apprenticeship and mastered his craft; properly, one who no longer is bound to serve for years but is hired day to day
Kedger/Bargeman - ferryman (kedge: to move (a ship) by means of a line attached to a kedge dropped at the distance and in the direction desired)
Knight - It was the duty of a Knight to learn how to fight and so serve their Lord according to the Code of Chivalry. Weapon practise included enhancing skills in the two-handed sword, battle axe, mace, dagger and lance.
Launderer (Laundress) - Washer
Legerdemainist/Magician - One skilled in slight of hand.
Messenger - Messengers were lesser diplomats of the lord who carried receipts, letters, and commodities.
Minstral - Minstrels provided Castle entertainment in the form of singing and playing musical instruments.
Moneylender - Moneylenders were the Medieval bankers.
Painter - Medieval castles ere highly colorful and the services of painters were often required
Physician - Physicians were a very highly regarded and respected occupation. Bleeding, lancing and surgical procedures were practised.
Preceptor/Preceptress - the headmaster or principal of a school
Prothonotary - Chief clerk of any of various courts of law
Registrar - Official who registers events such as land purchases or births
Scullery - Maid Female servant who performed all the menial tasks
Scullion - A kitchen helper
Sheather - Scabbard maker
Sherriff - The sheriff was an important official of county who was responsible for executing judicial duties
Steward - The Steward took care of the castle estate and household administration including the events in the Great Hall. This occupation was also referred to as a Seneschal
Squire - A Squire was junior to a Knight. It was the duty of a Squire to learn about the Code of Chivalry, the rules of Heraldry, horsemanship and practise the use of weapons.
Watchman - Watchmen was an official at the castle responsible for security. Also night-watchman
