Cause nobody wants to be the last one there.
Cause everyone wants to feel like someone cares.
Someone to love with my life in their hands.
There's gotta be somebody for me like that.

The fire crackled merrily away as i sat in the comfortable chair, the skirts of my gown spread out around me as i watched the flames dance. The library was rather empty, something i was grateful of, and so i had been given some time to think and relax. An open book lay on my lap, and two of the palace dogs sat by my feet, their bellies exposed to the fire on the chilly afternoon. Somewhere a door or window opened, letting a gust of cool air in, and i tucked my legs up under my skirts and continued to look blankly at the book in front of me.

I had no idea what it was about, i had just taken it off the shelf on a whim. It was in Latin, which i knew, but at that moment i couldnt be bothered to translate all of it in my head. Currently i was watching the rain fall outside the window, the thick glass beginning to become foggy from the heat of the burning taper above the window. I could barely see out the window, but i could see some of the castle grounds, in my new kingdom. The miserable weather was something i was getting used to. I disregarded it and turned my attention back to the little stack of books i had brought back from the shelves. I put the latin book away, and took another one, which was in german. I put it to the bottom of the pile immediately. I took another one, which was in English, and settled it on my lap as i just let my thoughts run wild.

I'd been here for six months now, and there were still things i had yet to get used to. Six months i'd been trying to get more than a bored, blank look out of my fiance. It was like fighting a loosing battle, but i had to fight till the last man standing. This was a permanent arrangement, and to go home would be a disaster. I had to stick it out, but sometimes it was just so frustrating, and the worse thing is he doesn't really talk to me so i don't know what i'm doing wrong. I looked down and temporarily away from my troubles and scanned a line of text, taking it in but not really absorbing what the crisp white pages were trying to say. I wish my life was like the book: black, white and simple. But it wasnt.

I blinked fiercely. Stop it. Right now a more demanding matter sprang to mind, and i shuffled in my chair so i could take my shoes off. I tucked my legs up again, and so i was wrapped in a tight little ball in the chair in the empty library. THe multitude of candles behind the protective glass screens cast eerie shadows about the place, and many nooks and crannies were hidden from view by the darkness that surrounded them. Another thing i'd noticed about England: it got dark early and it felt as if your life was being cut short. But in the bustling city of London, in Whitehall Palace, people scurried around as fast as humanly possible so i guess it worked out alright.

The dog at my feet whimpered and sat up, trotting away as i put my chin on the arm resting across the back of the chair. My fingers trailed over the table next to me, as i watched the candle flame for a second. My fingers brushed past the books, the candle tray, and then a stick of charcoal. i picked this up and twirled it around in my fingers. Having noticed a few blank pages towards the end of the book, i flicked to the end and put the charcoal to the page and within about a minute i had a rough sketch of the dog sitting in front of me, looking up with curious eyes. I smiled at the dog, patting the top of its head gently, before i turned to the next page to make another sketch of the library. I put the charcoal to paper and let my minds eye guide me, and after a minute i leaned back. Surveying the work, a pang of sadness hit me. It wasn't the library i'd drawn..but the castillo in Spain. It still didn't look right, so i spent a few more minutes sketching in detail, with no care about the book i'd defiled. In the back of my mind, i heard the library door open, but it didn't strike me as important at that moment. I was happier than i had been for weeks, and though dwelling on the past, i was content reminiscing.
